The Israelis claimed a fine 2-2 draw at St Jakob Park last week but fell behind early in the second leg on home soil, with Luca Zuffi netting just 11 minutes in. However, Maccabi captain Eran Zahavi stepped up to the mark by levelling matters midway through the first half and the hosts survived a second-half onslaught from their Swiss opponents, who reached the last 16 at Liverpool's expense last season, to progress on the away-goals rule. Shakhtar Donetsk, meanwhile, record a 3-2 aggregate victory overRapid Vienna- but only after being given an almighty scare in Lviv. The Ukrainians doubled their first-leg advantage when Marlos opened the scoring with just 10 minutes on the clock but the Austrian visitors turned the game - and indeed the tie - on its head by replying with goals from Louis Schaub and Steffen Hofmann by the midway point of the opening half. However, Shakhtar were only behind for five minutes thanks to Olexandr Gladkiy and Mircera Lucescu's ultimately sneaked into Thursday's draw, with their cause having been aided slightly by the late dismissal of Rapid's Mario Sonnleitner.
